Entry #12 Last One!!

 Hello, today is the last post on this blog. For today's post, I am in class listening to Anna Kelly's presentation. Her blog is about finding popular songs from a variety of artists, then finding brass music that has similar a similar vibe or style. 

She first shared Kendrick Lamar's Luther. He is very well known, having 20 grammys and a pulitzer. He recently performed at the Superbowl. The brass group is No BS Brass, they produce a lot of covers to songs. This one is called H H Pace. 

Next up we have Bad Guy by Billie Eilish. She recently won a Grammy, and is becoming more and more popular with the youth today. The brass song paired with this song is by Young Blood Brass Band called Waiver. This is a part of their album Is that a riot? They are known for their groove based style with brass instruments, along with some others like saxophone. 

The final song I want to share from Anna's presentation is one by The Charlie Daniels Band called the Devil went down to Georgia. I grew up listening to this song, I loved the violin part and how crazy and wild it felt. I had a chance to hear them live many years back at a Montana State Fair. Play that country tuba is the song that Anna paired it with. This was arranged for Brass Band by Steve Shanley. 

For today's blog I picked a game that goes along with the idea of pairing something popular with something else. The game Apples to Apples is a great comparison. Each player takes a turn being a judge and they select a word, or a personality trait. Then each other player secretly selects a card that goes best with that card. The judge then chooses one of those cards to win the round. First player to collect 5 judge cards wins!

Thank you all my readers for visiting my blog each week! I hope you were able to learn about brass music. I tried to share at least 12 different brass ensembles and their music, in a way to help you become more aware of the world of brass music, and even thought brass players aren't as popular as country or rap singers, they still have a lot to share. I hope you also enjoyed all the board games that I shared with you, they are each fun and, I would love to play each of them with you! As long as we listen to some brass music too! 

Entry #11 Space and Rainbows

Hello, Today I am in class listening to Robert Krause's presentation. He gave a very eclectic presentation, with a variety of ensembles and styles. I picked two groups and recordings and wanted to share them with you today. These both have a similar element of Space or the sky, kind of, its a bit of a stretch today!! The game that follows fits a space theme!

First up is Celestial Suite by Jim Stephenson.  This piece was commissioned in 2011 for the Axiom Brass quintet. Its purpose was to reflect on astronomy and sacred music and their relation. Each part of the quintet represents a famous astrologer. Each movement relates to a sacred experience in the astrologers lives. Also the keys of the movements spell out EARTH. E major, A major Re or D major Ti or B minor and H which in German is B major.  I hope you enjoy Celestial Suite. This is the Axiom Brass playing the fifth movement Hawking.

Next up is Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Ten Thing. I've shared them before on this blog, but for a recap, it is an all women brass ensemble. It was founded by Tine Thing Helseth. They are known for their excellent playing as well as their videography. This is not only fun to listen to, but to watch!

Finally for today's game I picked Cosmic Encounters. This is a game about space and taking control of other planets while you play as aliens. Each player is assigned an Alien and a color of spaceships. They put their spaceships on their planets and take turn sending their ships to other players planets, they battle it out with cards, and the winner keeps the planet, every alien has different abilities, so you have to be careful and make sure that you know who you are playing against. Whoever claims the most foreign planets wins! I hope you enjoy today's music as well as Cosmic Encounters. 

Entry #10 TEAMS

 Hello, for today’s post, I’m live blogging class with Professor Manning shading Joan Tower’s Fanfare for an Uncommon Woman. This piece is written for two brass quintets. On the score in the notes it says, the quintets should be separated as much as possible. So although they are playing the same music, and working together to make beautiful sounds, at times it may feel and sound like two teams battling it out, and from an audience perspective you can see two full size brass quintets which is a unique feature. This is the 3rd movement of 6 fanfares written by Tower. The two quintets are the New York Philharmonic and Empire Brass Quintet. 

Joan tower was born in 1938, she is a Grammy award winning composer. She has written music for multiple genres, including Ballet, Orchestra, Chamber like this piece and Solo works for voice and instruments. This piece derives its name from Aaron Copland Fanfare for a common man. 

Today’s game is also all about teams. The game is Disney Codenames. This game sets two teams against each other, and one member of the team knows all the information about certain Disney characters, whereas the rest has to guess which characters belong to them, the trick is you can only give two word clues that can’t involve the characters name, the first team to guess all the characters wins!

Entry #9 CONTROL

 Hello, for today's post, we were asked to scroll through the archives of old ABEL posts and find music that seemed interesting or that caught our attention. I found a blog titled Gorillas in the Mist from 2016. The point of the blog was to find brass players in unusual situations, like Gorillas in the Mist. One post I found was of Robots playing instruments. This peaked a class discussion because, as musicians we are terrified of losing our jobs to robots or to artificial intelligence. So today's theme is control, and the lack of it. 

Here is the clip on Toyota's Robotic Orchestra. It features four Robots who are actually playing instruments, two trumpet players, a tuba player and a drummer. Although this is a short video, I encourage you to find more videos or information by them. It is truly a scary sight as a musician to see Robots making music, however I think they have a long way to go till World Domination.

For today's game, I picked a game with a similar theme of Control. The game is The Resistance, it is similar to other games, such as Mafia or One Night Werewolf. How this game works is you must use your powers of control and manipulation to convince your fellow players that you are trustworthy and work as a team to find the people who are lying. Hand in hand with Robots, who we hope never control us, maybe this game can help us prepare for the eminent Robot Invasion!!
